During a CT scan, medical professionals found a three-centimeter needle in the brain of an elderly woman in the Russian Far East.
It had been there for 80 years, likely from a failed murder attempt by her parents during her childhood. The medical team chose not to remove it to avoid worsening her condition.
The regional health department in the isolated Sakhalin area of Russia stated that occurrences like these were frequent during the years of famine. Additionally, they mentioned that her parents probably made the decision to abandon their child amidst World War II, as she had been living with a three-centimeter needle embedded in her body since birth.
They highlighted that this method is commonly employed to conceal evidence of a crime.
Food shortages were widespread across the Soviet Union during the war, resulting in a significant portion of the population enduring severe poverty.
According to the local health department, the needle entered the left parietal lobe, but it failed to achieve the desired outcome as the girl managed to survive.
They further mentioned that the patient never experienced headaches as a result of the injury and was not at risk, emphasizing that her condition is being closely monitored by her treating physician.
