The green hydrogen industry in Jordan is attracting increased attention from international partnerships.

The green hydrogen sector in Jordan is in high hopes of attracting new investments from Germany and Australia, as the world collectively works towards reducing emissions and paving the way for a cleaner fuel future.

In light of this, Jordanian Prime Minister Dr. Bisher Al-Khasawneh recently conducted separate meetings with the CEOs of the Australian company Fortescue, Dr. Mark Hutchinson, and the German company Enertrag, Gunnar Hering, during his participation in the COP28 climate summit in the Emirates on Sunday, December 3.

Joined by Minister of Environment, Dr. Muawieh Radaideh, the Prime Minister engaged in fruitful discussions with both CEOs, delving into the potential investments that their companies plan to establish in Jordan's green hydrogen and green ammonia sectors. The future looks promising for Jordan's progress towards sustainability.

Renewable energy in Jordan

Al-Khasawneh has affirmed that Jordan is currently showing keen interest in investments within the realm of renewable energy. The country has already begun to diminish its reliance on traditional energy sources, with renewable energy now accounting for 27% of the national electricity mix as of 2022. In line with this trajectory, the Jordanian renewable energy sector has set an ambitious goal of elevating its contribution to the national electricity mix to 50% by the year 2030, as previously stated by Minister of Energy, Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, during an interview with the Energy Platform.

In a statement obtained by the Energy Platform, Al-Khasawneh emphasized the significance of investments in driving economic growth and creating employment opportunities for the youth of Jordan. The Prime Minister further elaborated on the government's commitment to supporting the establishment of a new global industry, with the aim of positioning Jordan as a leading hub in the region the manufacturing of green hydrogen.

Green hydrogen investments

The green hydrogen industry in Jordan is attracting increased attention from international partnerships, as it seeks to capitalize on the vast potential of natural energy resources and the government's support for investment. Recently, the sector has successfully entered into 8 memorandums of understanding, which include projects aimed at conducting feasibility studies for the development of green hydrogen in Jordan.

In a previous statement, Al-Kharabsheh emphasized that these memorandums of understanding and investment agreements in green hydrogen and green ammonia are aligned with the ministry's vision and the energy sector's aspirations. The ultimate goal is for Jordan to become a regional and global hub for hydrogen production and export.

Al-Kharabsheh further emphasized his country's commitment to facilitating investment in green hydrogen in Jordan, recognizing it as a valuable opportunity for both the nation and investors. This burgeoning sector has shown promise in European countries, making it an attractive prospect for Jordan.

The Jordanian government is actively working towards strengthening Jordan's position as a regional center for green energy production. By leveraging its abundant renewable energy sources and strategic location in the Middle East and Africa region, Jordan aims to play a pivotal role in the green energy landscape.
