Record low employment rate in Turkey

New data showed that turkey's unemployment rate rose to 13.4 percent during the past period under the novel coronavirus pandemic, which runs from May to July.

According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute, the number of people who said they were "very desperate" to look for a job reached a record level of 1,380,000, almost three times the level last year, although economic activity almost fully resumed at the beginning of June.

Unemployment is likely to rise even further if the government ends the current "ban on layoffs" law, which runs until November, which has protected many from being dismissed.

According to Reuters, the employment rate has declined at an unprecedented pace in Turkey, and data showed that employment fell by nearly 2 million people compared to last year, a decline of 42.4 percent over the three months.

Official data in Turkey, published at the end of August, revealed that Turkey's economy contracted by 9.9 percent during the second quarter of this year compared to the first quarter.
