Iraqi security sources reported on Saturday evening that several Katyusha rockets were launched toward the United States Embassy in Baghdad, marking the latest in a series of security incidents in the capital. According to the sources, four rockets were fired in the direction of the embassy compound.

Air Defense System Activated Inside Embassy Compound

Around the same time, correspondents from Al-Arabiya and Al-Hadath reported that the embassy’s air defense systems were activated, indicating an attempt to intercept incoming projectiles.

Drone Attack Targets Baghdad International Airport

The incident followed a drone strike on the Baghdad International Airport complex shortly after midnight on Friday. The facility includes both a military base and a diplomatic support area used by the United States. Security officials told AFP that multiple drones and rockets targeted the airport area, and ambulances were dispatched to the scene to respond to possible casualties.

Another security source confirmed that a drone strike was followed by a fire within the airport complex, though details about the extent of the damage were not immediately available.

Earlier that day, drones also targeted a military base located at Baghdad International Airport, which hosts a logistics support unit affiliated with the US Embassy. One official said four drones were directed toward the base, while another reported that at least two of the drones crashed inside the facility’s perimeter.

Oil Facility in Basra Hit by Drone Strike

Meanwhile, southern Iraq experienced a separate attack on the Burjesia oil complex in Basra province, a site hosting operations linked to foreign energy companies. Security officials reported that two drones were shot down over the facility, but a third drone penetrated defenses and struck the site. The full impact of the attack is still under investigation.

Rising Security Tensions Across Iraq

Security concerns around Baghdad International Airport and other sensitive locations have intensified in recent days. Since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war with Iran roughly a week ago, several drones have been intercepted near Baghdad Airport. The US Embassy has also issued warnings regarding potential attacks by Iran-aligned armed groups targeting hotels frequented by foreign nationals in the Kurdistan Region.

In a separate incident on Thursday, a drone crashed in the Albuitha area of the Dora district, south of Baghdad. The crash caused property damage to a nearby home and three vehicles but resulted in no injuries. Authorities have yet to determine the drone’s origin and have launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances.
