US President Donald Trump declared on Sunday through his Truth Social platform that the government will issue a "cash payment" of a minimum of $2,000 to most citizens.
In his post, Trump mentioned that only those with high incomes would qualify for exemption, yet he failed to detail the income levels or any timeline related to this.
Trump's statement comes about a week after the Democrats achieved significant victories in multiple local and state elections, especially by securing the governorships of New Jersey and Virginia, and by taking control of seats from Republicans on the Georgia Public Services Committee, a state that has traditionally leaned Republican.
After the election, dissatisfaction grew among Trump's supporters, indicating that he had not sufficiently prioritized his core electoral base, to whom he had committed during his campaign to decrease the cost of living.
Several months ago, President Trump had publicly suggested the notion of providing cash to American citizens, but he did not act on it at that time.
