Meta Platforms' Threads app hit about 10 million subscribers just seven hours after it launched, said Mark Zuckerberg, president of Meta Platforms and founder of Facebook.
As the Twitter platform falters, Mark Zuckerberg launches Threads, a long-awaited Instagram companion that challenges "Twitter," giving Elon Musk Another blow, intensifying competition among the top tech billionaires.
"Let's get started. Welcome to Threads," Zuckerberg wrote in his first post on the app on Wednesday, complete with a fire emoji. The app attracted 5 million subscribers in its first four hours, he said.
The app is very similar to Twitter, allowing users to like, retweet and reply to short text posts, but lacks direct messaging capabilities. According to Meta's blog post, an article can be up to 500 characters in length and contain links, images, and videos up to five minutes long.
According to the publication, the Threads app is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in more than 100 countries.
Although Threads launched as a standalone app, users can easily add to Instagram's more than 2 billion monthly active users by logging in with their Instagram credentials and following the same accounts.
Before Threads launched, Zuckerberg and Musk had feuded for months, even threatening to have an actual MMA cage match in Las Vegas.
Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion in October last year, but the platform's value has since plummeted as a result of massive layoffs and a content-moderation controversy that led to a massive exodus of advertisers. The platform's latest move is to limit the number of tweets users can read each day.
Zuckerberg addressed these challenges in a subsequent Threads post. He wrote: "It’ll take some time, but I think there should be a public conversations app with 1 billion+ people on it, Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn’t nailed it. Hopefully we will."
Within minutes of its launch, the Threads app attracted notable brands such as Billboard, HBO, and Netflix, along with celebrities like Shakira. Upon close examination by Reuters, it became apparent that the app does not showcase any advertisements.
